In his introduction to the song "We Don't Need No Colour Code" at Creation 2003, Steve said,

This next song is about Africa.  Some people are thinking, 'oh, boy, another depressing song about Africa'.  And there's a lot of depressing things going on over there.  My wife and I were there with "Compassion" a couple of years ago, and we saw a lot of things that really got us down.  And what's even more depressing is, over the last few years, seeing the crisis of AIDS decimate an entire continent, creating thousands and millions of widows and orphans across the continent.  And what's even more depressing is that, a few years ago, a poll came out and said that Christians were very unlikely to get involved in the African crisis.  I think a lot of us think, you know, it's hopeless and there's nothing really we can do about it, and things just tend to get worse anyways, so what are we gonna do?

Well, this next song is actually a celebration of irrelevance in song-writing.  This next song proves that things can actually get better.  Because twenty years ago when I wrote this song, it was about Africa.  And it talked about the policy of apartheid in South Africa.  And it talked about a Christian college called Bob Jones University that had a policy for students where there was no interracial dating among students, if you can believe that.  Twenty years later, we're sitting here, and I'm getting ready to sing this song, and this song has no relevance.  Because aparthied is done in South Africa.  And Bob Jones University doesn't have that policy anymore.  They got rid of it a few years ago.  So tonight we're going to celebrate this song, and the irrelevance of this song.  And it's going to be a reminder that if we do what Jesus commands us to do, if we love our neighbors, that things can actually turn out for the better.  And I believe that if we keep doing what a lot of you have done in the last year, which is things like sponsor children in Africa through "Compassion".  We've got five that we sponsor in <?> and Tanzania.  If you guys keep calling your congressmen and tell them that you're a Christian and you want to see AIDS fought in Africa and you support our President who's committed all this money, American money, to go and fight that.  If we keep doing what Jesus tells us to do, things are going to get better over in Africa.  So this is a song called "We Don't Need No Colour Code".
